The Nursery is staffed by a class teacher and two qualified Early-Years practitioners.
The curriculum is based around the seven areas of learning of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): Communication and Language; Physical Development; Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; Expressive Arts and Design.
Children in the Nursery are taught by subject specialists in music and physical education (including swimming) and enjoy the wide range of facilities on both the Prep School and Senior School sites. Creative artwork plays an important part in the curriculum and the colourful displays in the classroom and around the school help to make a bright and stimulating learning environment. Most importantly of all, learning at this level is through play and children are encouraged to have fun!
Full time education will begin for most children in the Reception year with their fully qualified class teacher and classroom assistant. The curriculum in Reception is designed to build on the knowledge and skills the children have learned in Nursery. The activities continue to be based around the seven areas of learning in the EYFS and the children are encouraged to participate in both adult led and child initiated activities. The specialist teaching from Nursery continues and the children make full use of the outside classroom area which has been designed with their enjoyment and safety in mind.
The curriculum in Year One is designed to extend the children academically whilst ensuring breadth and balance in the activities on offer. The children are encouraged to become increasingly independent and take responsibility for activities in the classroom, for example changing their own reading books. A full time teaching assistant works in each of the Year One and Two classrooms. Specialist taught music and games continue and pupils also get the opportunity to learn ICT, French and RE from subject specialist teachers.
In Year Two pupils consolidate all that has been taught before as well as being introduced to new and challenging experiences to foster independent learning. All children in Years One and Two perform in the Christmas Play which will be based on the Nativity and individual music lessons are introduced and taught by the music staff. Specialist taught music and games continue and pupils also get the opportunity to learn ICT, French and RE from subject specialist teachers.
